Poet Doc Patrick Clary appeard at River Run Bookstore in Portsmouth, NH, for an evening of reading poems from his second book of poetry, Dying For Beginners (Lost Borders Press; October, 2006). Introduced by bestselling novelist Monica Wood (Any Bitter Thing, Chronicle Books, May, 2005), who also wrote the Introduction to Dying for Beginners, Clary read ten poems from the collection of forty-five poems (see below). Following the reading, Clary took questions from the audience and spoke about the pleasures of poetry and autographed his book. The Poet Doctor continued his book tour with a panel on Love and Death with the new U.S. Poet Laureate, fellow New Hampshire poet Donald Hall, who wrote the Foreword to Dying For Beginners. Recorded at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where Donald Hall's wife, the poet Jane Kenyon, spent many of the last days of her life, Dr. Clary read Memorial Day and The Pain, and Donald Hall read 14 poems about love and death from his acclaimed White Apples and the Taste of Stone: Selected Poems 1946-2006 (Houghton Mifflin, 2006) and took questions from the audience of Doctors, nurses and medical students on anger, the influence of Emily Dickinson, the importance of line breaks in poetry, the poets who influenced them most, and the significance of reading and writing poetry. In his role as one of the nation's foremost palliative care specialists, Dr. Clary recorded a talk on opioid guidelines, bedside manners, and lollipops and other pain killers at the Veterans Nurses Association in Manchester, New Hampshire.
